Arlington Heights, IL (November 28, 2012) -- Scranton Gillette Communications/SGC Horizon and the U.S. Green Building Council – Illinois Chapter (USGBC-Illinois), in conjunction with the USGBC Heartland Regional Council, announced today plans to co-locate their events in 2013, BUILDINGChicago and Greening the Heartland respectively. “After looking at the complementary nature of our two events,” explained Harry Urban, VP of Events for SGC, “both groups decided it would bring added value to attendees and exhibitors to schedule our 2013 events in the same location.” The co-located events will be held at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza.

Greening the Heartland (GTH), USGBC’s annual Midwest event, will be held September 9 and 10, followed by BUILDINGChicago, September 10-12. “We are excited to be working with SGC with their extensive background in providing quality education through BD+C University,” said Katie Kaluzny, Interim Executive Director U.S. Green Building Council — Illinois Chapter.

She added, “The GTH track will be extended to run through the BUILDINGChicago conference offering added opportunities for sharing green building best practices and continuing education for LEED Accredited Professionals. We also plan to create new events within our schedules to allow both groups to share their experiences and do some networking.”

Rob Cassidy, Editorial Director of Building Design+Construction, described the opportunity as a great combination of equally strong educational programs. “Each event will retain its identity and schedule, but our goal is to focus a spotlight on the commercial building and construction industry in Chicago and the Midwest for a week next September.” Cassidy added, “This will be a great opportunity for top managers across all phases of the industry to come together to learn, network and enjoy the city.”

Backed by the Chicago Chamber of Commerce, the Builders Association chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America and the Chicago chapter of the American Institute of Architects, BUILDINGChicago will provide a wide variety of educational and networking opportunities built upon the strong track record of high-quality, AIA-accredited education for architects through BD+C University. Session tracks will include Building Information Modeling, Developments in Healthcare and Universities, and Tips for CEO/Owners, and will offer CEU credit for most sessions.

Greening the Heartland will explore interdependent elements of sustainability. While green buildings are critical components in the design of sustainable communities, their key advantages rely on pathways and infrastructure — watts, water, waste and wheels. Providing buildings with clean energy, water, efficient use of materials while minimizing waste, and convenient and sustainable means of arrival results in truly green buildings and sustainable developments. The theme reflects the concept of bringing people together to share visions and solutions for sustainable communities in which to work, play, learn and live.
